Novelist and editor Doris Grumbach's "Fifty Days of Solitude" traces her solitary life in a Maine village before returning to her active bookstore career. There, at 72, she comes to terms with her aging, observing the quiet winter around her small cottage and limiting her conversations with the postmistress and her fellow church-goers.
Wednesday, May 17th at 7:00 p.m.
In "Drinking the Rain," Alix Kates Shulman recalls her retreat at age 50 to a Maine island cabin without any modern conveniences in order to reconstruct her life. She discovered a self-sufficiency not suspected in her busy New York writing and political activist's experiences. Recommended by Doris Grumbach.
